Do I need to know how to play Mahjong?
Not at all! Birdies was created for players of every level. Whether you've never touched a tile or you've been playing for years, there's a seat at the table for you.
Our beginner lessons teach everything you need to confidently play American Mahjong, while our experienced play sessions are designed for those who already know the basics.
Which version of Mahjong do you play?
Birdies primarily plays American Mahjong using the current National Mah Jongg League card.
We also offer specialty events and are always looking for opportunities to introduce members to other styles of Mahjong.
I've never played before. Where should I start?
Our instructors walk you through:
- Tile recognition
- Charleston
- Reading the NMJL card
- Game strategy
- Table etiquette
- Confidence-building practice
You'll leave ready to join beginner-friendly open play.
Can i play with traditional white tiles or bring my own tiles?
Can I come by myself?
Absolutely—and many of our guests do.
You're in good company. Birdies was built around community. If you reserve a single seat, we'll pair you with other friendly members looking for a table.
Some of the best friendships at Birdies will begin over a shared Mahjong rack.
Birdies will do our best to create a full table of four for every open-play reservation. If a table has not reached enough players to play, we may combine reservations with another table or comparable play time.
If we’re unable to form a playable table, we’ll contact you approximately 24 hours in advance and offer the option to move your reservation to another available session, receive a full Birdies credit, or receive a refund.
If we have three players, we’ll make every effort to provide a Birdies house player so the game can go on.

Can I book an entire table?
Yes!
Reserve all four seats if you'd like a private game with your own group.
What if I don't have four players?
No problem.
Book one, two, or three seats and we'll fill the remaining spots whenever possible.
What should I bring?
Birdies provides:
- Premium Mahjong sets
- NMJL cards (when applicable)
- Racks and pushers
- Dice
- Scorecards
- Everything needed to play
If you have a favorite Mahjong card or lucky rack, you're always welcome to bring it.
Do I need a membership?
Everyone is welcome to book lessons, events, and open play.
Membership simply unlocks additional benefits, exclusive events, early booking windows, and special member pricing.

What happens if I need to cancel?
- Changes made 48+ hours before your reservation may be eligible for store credit.
- Reservations changed within 24 hours, same-day cancellations, and no-shows are not eligible for refunds or credit.
- All reservations are final sale.
These policies allow us to provide the best experience for everyone waiting to play.
What if I'm running late?
Lessons and games begin promptly out of respect for all guests. Depending on when you arrive, you may be asked to join a later session if available.

Our boutique features a curated collection of Mahjong tiles, racks, bags, accessories, gifts, apparel, and thoughtfully selected lifestyle pieces.
Do you offer any discounts?
We offer a 15% discount for Military Personnel, First Responders, Teachers and Healthcare Workers. We don't want finances to be a barrier for community. If the price point is inaccessible, please reach out to i[email protected] and we would love to accommodate you.

What's the difference between reserving all seven tables vs. booking a private event?
A private event gives you the whole space exclusively for three hours, with two dedicated hostesses, a group photo, merchandise and boutique discounts, special touches, and room for up to 36 guests (vs. 28). It's ideal for birthdays, showers, or any celebration where you want Birdies entirely to yourselves!
